Travis Smith: my resume, bio and photos back to the main blog page

So, you all know the stories of our rental place being sold out from under us three times in five years.  Yep.

Well, the latest trouble comes in the form of this letter from our new landlords:

Dear Susie & Travis

The City of Vancouver has recently instructed us that the interior stair between the main floor and the lowest level has to be reinstated.

This will require that the Washer/Dryer off the kitchen on the main floor will have to be relocated.

We anticipate scheduling this work to be carried out in October.  Once we return from our vacation we will meet with you and present the strategy to minimize any disruption to you.

Best wishes for the rest of the summer!

Here’s a picture of the current arrangement.

This change will require connecting our unit to the unit downstairs, which I really don’t like the feel of, even if there is a lock on a door between them—it’s less secure, and lets noise carry better.

It will also require us losing some floor space to the washer dryer, and I really don’t like the sound of that.  Our place has little enough storage as it is.  I don’t think we have much recourse, though—I mean, can we stop the landlord from making this renovation? I doubt it.

Maybe the landlords will come up with an awesome solution—rooftop laundry, or free drycleaning or I don’t know what… but it’s another pain in the keaster and I just want to have a place to call my own. sigh.

Overheard

“The sad truth is that most evil is done by people who never make up their minds to be good or evil.”

...who said it?

“Almost every American I know does trade large portions of his life for entertainment, hour by weeknight hour, binge by Saturday binge, Facebook check by Facebook check. I’m one of them. In the course of writing this I’ve watched all 13 episodes of House of Cards and who knows how many more West Wing episodes, and I’ve spent any number of blurred hours falling down internet rabbit holes. All instead of reading, or writing, or working, or spending real time with people I love.”

...who said it?

“Live a good life. If there are gods and they are just, then they will not care how devout you have been, but will welcome you based on the virtues you have lived by. If there are gods, but unjust, then you should not want to worship them. If there are no gods, then you will be gone, but will have lived a noble life that will live on in the memories of your loved ones.”

...who said it?

“I play with variables constantly.”

...who said it?

“Only the person who has learned Continual Love coming from a heart of Gratitude/Worship can effectively deal with the problem of loneliness.”
