Travis Smith: my resume, bio and photos back to the main blog page

Someone sweeter than me pointed out that my last blog entry could be interpreted as a little negative, that I was ragging on many people who legitimately couldn’t come to my party.

To which I say, um, well, it’s a blog.  If you’re looking for self-censorship, may I suggest you peruse my old annual reviews, or perhaps one of my tax returns.  Just kidding, Mr. IRS Computer! Move along, nothing to parse here!

Actually, my point was, all those people, all those excuses, and even though they were individually quite justified, they piled up into a big rejection.  The real shame of it is that the event was pretty much RIDICULOUSLY fun.  Those who did attend got to:

* watch several grown men poke at a circuit box trying to restore power to the kitchen lights
* cook by candlelight when several grown men admitted defeat and started drinking heavily
* see Travis get grease on his party pants by hauling an empty propane tank to get it refilled
* enjoy delicious hamburgers and hot dogs cooked on the freshly purchased propane

* play “Wise and Otherwise,” a board game of old sayings for bluffers and believers alike
* dress up in fuzzy pyjamas and lounge around on comfy couches giggling
* tromp around in the damp green backyard finding enormous spiders and deserted tree houses
* walk to the nearby beach and throw small rocks at a big rock with embarrassingly low accuracy but big splashes

* sleep in a bed with unicorn sheets (one lucky person only)
* enjoy a leisurely ferry ride both ways
* discover that I’m super fortunate and my friends are all great people, who seem to enjoy hanging out with each other
* get dropped off at your door on either end

And I should point out the best thing of all, from my perspective.  There’s is nothing I love better than getting up in the morning and making a nice, relaxed breakfast with friends.  I love the quiet calm, the tasty pancakes, the easy cooperation.  When I think back on some of my best times with the people I like, and who like me, chances are, I’m thinking about a breakfast.

I think that if, instead of having summits and conferences and state dinners, if world leaders slept over and made breakfast together, that world peace would come naturally.  Hey, have you got a better plan?

Overheard

“The sad truth is that most evil is done by people who never make up their minds to be good or evil.”

...who said it?

“Almost every American I know does trade large portions of his life for entertainment, hour by weeknight hour, binge by Saturday binge, Facebook check by Facebook check. I’m one of them. In the course of writing this I’ve watched all 13 episodes of House of Cards and who knows how many more West Wing episodes, and I’ve spent any number of blurred hours falling down internet rabbit holes. All instead of reading, or writing, or working, or spending real time with people I love.”

...who said it?

“Live a good life. If there are gods and they are just, then they will not care how devout you have been, but will welcome you based on the virtues you have lived by. If there are gods, but unjust, then you should not want to worship them. If there are no gods, then you will be gone, but will have lived a noble life that will live on in the memories of your loved ones.”

...who said it?

“I play with variables constantly.”

...who said it?

“Only the person who has learned Continual Love coming from a heart of Gratitude/Worship can effectively deal with the problem of loneliness.”
