Why I’m Not Blogging These Days, Really
I used to have a blog. Now I have a conversation.
It started with Flickr. I had this blog, see, for years and years starting in the late 1990s, and people didn’t even call it a blog, and they’d say, I read on your Web site that you bought a bike. Or, I got your email newsletter and I can’t believe you tried to save Brad Pitt from being kidnapped. Or, I’m sorry to hear about your parents; I can’t believe you wrote that on your Weblog.
The blog was good and I loved the blog and the blog was alive and the blog was me.
Then though I was still blogging, I started posting to Flickr, most days, a photo or two of my day. That was fun, and people would comment there, and I didn’t mind. They were photo enthusiasts, and it seemed natural. I integrated the flickr photos in my blog, like this:
Flickr wasn’t a distraction from my blog. That’s what I told myself.
I signed up with Twitter in November 2006. 140 characaters, that’s nothing like blogging. I’ve tried integrating my tweets into my blog feed, first as a daily / weekly post, then as a sidebar. Neither reall got the conversation flowing on the blog.
I joined Facebook in 2004 but didn’t do much with it until 2007, when I started to post a few things there, too. People replied on my wall; it was cool, why not.
I used Blip.fm to share songs. I use Path to share my day, and Instagram has replaced Flickr as my daily photo journal.
I’m scattered to the five corners of the Internet, and while I’m online just as much, I’m not writing here, I’m writing everywhere, and that makes me worry because there’s no there out there. The center is missing.
