Travis Smith: my resume, bio and photos back to the main blog page

This entry really needs the support of a visual, so I’ve done my first vlog—ewww, that’s an awful word.  What I mean is, this entry has a video clip in it.

Susie and I need a new apartment.  Here’s why:

We’re looking for something either in Coal Harbour, or in Kits.  Gastown seems nice but not safe enough at night.  South False Creek also seems OK, if something appears there.  Yaletown just has never appealled—I can’t explain it.

Our requirements are straightforward.  The place needs to be at least 1100 square feet.  It should have decent light, but not be a fishbowl like our current place, which heats up to 40C on sunny days.  Yes, that’s correct, it really does.

We need two bedrooms and a den, or three bedrooms.  Parking isn’t a big deal.  We like hardwood floors.  Walking distance to grocery store.  It needs to be cool in the summer—we’re there all day, so something that heats up in the sun is no good.  A/C or good air flow is essential. Security is a big deal—don’t want someone to steal Hop Studios.

A view is nice but not necessary.  Some sort of patio deck outside area is nice but not necessary.  If it’s a large apartment, a clean exercise room is nice but not a deal breaker.  If it’s a house, closet space is what’s usually lacking, so some sort of alternative storage would be nice.  We like something with some personality and unique features—it can be old or new, just not a generic box.

Ideally, we’d like a loft-y type space like in with an exposed brick wall and overhead beams, but that’s sort of a best-case scenario.

Oh, and did I mention it has to be quiet?  Uh, did you watch the video?

Overheard

“The sad truth is that most evil is done by people who never make up their minds to be good or evil.”

...who said it?

“Almost every American I know does trade large portions of his life for entertainment, hour by weeknight hour, binge by Saturday binge, Facebook check by Facebook check. I’m one of them. In the course of writing this I’ve watched all 13 episodes of House of Cards and who knows how many more West Wing episodes, and I’ve spent any number of blurred hours falling down internet rabbit holes. All instead of reading, or writing, or working, or spending real time with people I love.”

...who said it?

“Live a good life. If there are gods and they are just, then they will not care how devout you have been, but will welcome you based on the virtues you have lived by. If there are gods, but unjust, then you should not want to worship them. If there are no gods, then you will be gone, but will have lived a noble life that will live on in the memories of your loved ones.”

...who said it?

“I play with variables constantly.”

...who said it?

“Only the person who has learned Continual Love coming from a heart of Gratitude/Worship can effectively deal with the problem of loneliness.”

...who said it?
