Travis Smith: my resume, bio and photos back to the main blog page

Last night, Susie and I went out to Le Crocodile for her birthday dinner, and I wrote this email to a friend:

I’ll let Susie describe dinner:

dinner last night was outstanding! le crocodile is a french restaurant, my favorite 😉 i had foie gras with figs and balsamic reduction for an appetizer. so good. and then i had halibut and a tempura lobster tail on tagliatelle with a saffron cream sauce for the entree. travis had something with artichokes for the appetizer and dover sole with buerre blanc—also perfect. oh, and a bottle of sancerre, too.

the sommelier was very knowledgable and personable and we talked about how much we dislike chardonnays and he gave us a taste of a chardonnay he thought we might like even though it is a chardonnay, which was cool. [he was wrong, though - travis] service was outstanding.

I will also note that dessert was chocolate mousse prefaced by an amuse bouche of pear sorbet and eau de vie, which is like water gone bad.  And the check came with four delightful little chocolate crocodiles which tried to bite my head off but ended up having the reverse happen.

I had considered ordering the skate, in honor of Steve Irwin, but decided not to.

The nice thing about Dover Sole is that the waiter has to do all this extra work at your table side to debone it.  I like any food that requires the server to fuss with it.  Like grinding pepper.  I usually don’t even want it, but I always say yes because I like the fussing.

Ooh, this is starting to sound like a blog entry.  I think I’ll post it.

And so I did.

Overheard

“The sad truth is that most evil is done by people who never make up their minds to be good or evil.”

...who said it?

“Almost every American I know does trade large portions of his life for entertainment, hour by weeknight hour, binge by Saturday binge, Facebook check by Facebook check. I’m one of them. In the course of writing this I’ve watched all 13 episodes of House of Cards and who knows how many more West Wing episodes, and I’ve spent any number of blurred hours falling down internet rabbit holes. All instead of reading, or writing, or working, or spending real time with people I love.”

...who said it?

“Live a good life. If there are gods and they are just, then they will not care how devout you have been, but will welcome you based on the virtues you have lived by. If there are gods, but unjust, then you should not want to worship them. If there are no gods, then you will be gone, but will have lived a noble life that will live on in the memories of your loved ones.”

...who said it?

“I play with variables constantly.”

...who said it?

“Only the person who has learned Continual Love coming from a heart of Gratitude/Worship can effectively deal with the problem of loneliness.”
