Travis Smith: my resume, bio and photos back to the main blog page

Thursday, we officially put our house on the market.

There are still some little bits of work to do (some cement work, and the gutters) but it’s in wonderful shape.

At this point, all we can do is go from worrying about selling it to worrying about it NOT selling.

So, you may remember that we had a little city-picking crisis recently.  No, let’s be honest—it was a big crisis.

And the house is on the market.  So what does that mean?

Well, it means we’re more sure now than we were.  It means we’re more than 50% sure that this is the right thing to do, and since this is a binary decision (sell / not-sell), we’re moving ahead.

I knew this already, but this reaffirmed that not every decision in life is clear at the time—or even afterwards.

Our house in L.A. was many things: a first house, a nice house, where Hop Studios got started, where my sister Staci lived with us, where my sister Virginia came to do laundry, where Matt stayed with us.

It had some Christmases, some birthdays and anniversaries, too.

It’s where my Dad spent a week hunting ants with chemicals that Home Depot almost refused to sell him.

But, the universe sometimes sends you messages, too.  After getting back to Vancouver, two articles appeared in the news.  The first said that L.A. had regained the #1 spot as smog-infested capital of North America.  And another article said that L.A. had just passed 4 million people.

Also that week, Griffith Park burst into flames and 600 acres were burnt, and there was a riot in MacArthur Park where police beat protesters and journalists.

Temperatures rose to 104 where Susie was staying in Silverlake.  Meanwhile in Vancouver, it’s like my friends are trying to show me the best of what this city has to offer.  Zak and Mandy took me for Ethiopian dinner at Fassil Restaurant, and Rachael, Susie and I took a walk to buy pie and watch the sun set at Jericho Beach.

I think I’ll always miss the place on Paloma, but I can’t picture moving to L.A. again.  So, anyone wanna buy a house?

Overheard

“The sad truth is that most evil is done by people who never make up their minds to be good or evil.”

...who said it?

“Almost every American I know does trade large portions of his life for entertainment, hour by weeknight hour, binge by Saturday binge, Facebook check by Facebook check. I’m one of them. In the course of writing this I’ve watched all 13 episodes of House of Cards and who knows how many more West Wing episodes, and I’ve spent any number of blurred hours falling down internet rabbit holes. All instead of reading, or writing, or working, or spending real time with people I love.”

...who said it?

“Live a good life. If there are gods and they are just, then they will not care how devout you have been, but will welcome you based on the virtues you have lived by. If there are gods, but unjust, then you should not want to worship them. If there are no gods, then you will be gone, but will have lived a noble life that will live on in the memories of your loved ones.”

...who said it?

“I play with variables constantly.”

...who said it?

“Only the person who has learned Continual Love coming from a heart of Gratitude/Worship can effectively deal with the problem of loneliness.”
