My sister’s just got herself a brand new, exciting job working for a big tech company with headquarters in New York, and she leaves in just a few weeks for four months (FOUR MONTHS!) of training in New York City, and she’s pleased as punch.
She’s going to be a sales associate, working in Western Canada. I’m not naming the company but it’s big and awesome and she had to go through a rigorous interview process.
They flew her to New York and she got all dressed up in a brand new outfit, and beamed confidence bright like the launch of the Titan 5. I think it was the pearl earrings that pushed her over the top. Or perhaps it was the fact that she’s smart as heck, great with new people, really into technology, and a work horse.
She doesn’t have direct sales experience and was up against a very large number of candidates who did, so she really had to sell HERSELF and her potential in the interview process, and in a meta- kind of way, she succeeded in that sale, which makes me think she’ll succeed at this job, too. Here’s a little picture of the view from the training office.
And, yes, that’s not a postcard.
She says, “On a scale of 1 to 1000 of excitement I am a 1500. I am also quite nervous.” I’m proud as hell, and also glad she’s not moving to New York permanently, and happy that she says she’s going to buy me things with her huge commissions.
“Almost every American I know does trade large portions of his life for entertainment, hour by weeknight hour, binge by Saturday binge, Facebook check by Facebook check. I’m one of them. In the course of writing this I’ve watched all 13 episodes of House of Cards and who knows how many more West Wing episodes, and I’ve spent any number of blurred hours falling down internet rabbit holes. All instead of reading, or writing, or working, or spending real time with people I love.”
“Live a good life. If there are gods and they are just, then they will not care how devout you have been, but will welcome you based on the virtues you have lived by. If there are gods, but unjust, then you should not want to worship them. If there are no gods, then you will be gone, but will have lived a noble life that will live on in the memories of your loved ones.”
