Hear that? That roar of the crowd, building, building, chanting your name? No, you’re not crazy, you’re just one of the chosen…
Yes, it’s almost time for yours and my favorite ultimate team, East Van Halen, to take to the stage again. The days just got long and Summer is not that far off—and that means, you gotta start thinking: How much ultimate am I going to play this year?
If the answer is: “some”, then dig out that rock shirt, and get ready for a lot of emails from me, the band manager.
Summer pre-registration for the Vancouver Ultimate League begins tomorrow and ends later in March. I want to see if we can put together the best darn band - I mean team - ever. Forget the fact that I have a gimp knee. Forget the fact that, if you’re like everyone else on East Van, you might have had several kids in the past year. Forget the fact that you’ve eaten nothing but waffles and nachos since Jan. 1 (which is a weird resolution to make, but we don’t judge). Just remember: you’ll never be younger then you are now! Let’s DO THIS THING!
If you’re interested in playing on EVH, just LET ME KNOW. That’s key: telling me. Here are some facts you probably want to know:
* We play on Thursday night, 6-9 p.m.
* The season is May 2 - Aug 15
* The team fee is about $75
* Yes, we’re looking for new players
* No, we’re not the top team in the league, but we have the most fun. Guaranteed.
* There’s a kick-off BBQ and 2 practices

“Almost every American I know does trade large portions of his life for entertainment, hour by weeknight hour, binge by Saturday binge, Facebook check by Facebook check. I’m one of them. In the course of writing this I’ve watched all 13 episodes of House of Cards and who knows how many more West Wing episodes, and I’ve spent any number of blurred hours falling down internet rabbit holes. All instead of reading, or writing, or working, or spending real time with people I love.”
“Live a good life. If there are gods and they are just, then they will not care how devout you have been, but will welcome you based on the virtues you have lived by. If there are gods, but unjust, then you should not want to worship them. If there are no gods, then you will be gone, but will have lived a noble life that will live on in the memories of your loved ones.”
