I got my hair cut and dyed on my birthday. I don’t have any totally great photos of it yet, but I’ll get one. This one’s from Kris, but he tends to wash out his photos artistically, and my hair’s now even darker than this in person.
My sister asked if it was because I have grey hair. Well, I don’t have much grey hair, but the tufts I have, I’ve had since I was 12. So in fact, that was one reason I didn’t want to dye it, because I didn’t want to lose those.
I’ve been thinking about making my hair darker for years, I’ve just never had the gumption to go do it. I was nervous about it, nervous about people’s reaction. I didn’t go too much darker, but so far, just about every one’s noticed it, and just about everyone likes it, though there’s a look of confusion on a few faces when I first meet them.
I think that hair coloring for guys is about to take off, the way tattoos on women has over the past decade. I think it’s part of a trend to take more control over expressing our own individuality, taking control of our physical self-image, and it’s part of a continued trend towards not enforcing a particular “work” or “social” uniform, leaving people to evolve their own.
Oh, and Susie got her hair dyed, too, but that’s her story.
