I’m Quitting Facebook: What, Why, How?

Cancelled

It’s been three days since I quote Facebook, but it feels like a week.  Here’s a few things I’ve noticed:

1) I’m blogging more.  If nothing else, that feels fantastic.

2) Some apps require you to have a Facebook account to sign up and use them—some dating apps specifically. So, no Facebook account: no dating app account.

3) It was way, way harder to actually hit the delete button than i thought it would be.  It was almost akin to bungie jumping.  Not that I’ve done that.  But it felt like I imagine bungie jumping would feel like.  And it is a decade of my efforts, gone from public / semi-private / private display. Hard to walk away from that.

4) If you think quitting Facebook is hard—I mean the process itself, not the overall decision—you should try Instagram.  No, seriously, try it.  Try right now to figure out how to disable or delete your Instagram account without Googling it or using Instagram’s help documentation. I will give $20 to the first person who can figure it out on their own.

5) Wait, I have to remember birthdays again?

...Facebook ads costing £1m that purport to be from various grassroots pro-Brexit movements were discovered to be administered by employees of Sir Lynton Crosby’s lobbying company and a former adviser to Boris Johnson, the US Department of Housing and Urban Development sued Facebook for allegedly violating the Fair Housing Act, and Zuckerberg himself was found to have had years of his old posts deleted. So yeah, not sorry I walked away from that hot mess.

Overheard

“The sad truth is that most evil is done by people who never make up their minds to be good or evil.”

...who said it?

“Almost every American I know does trade large portions of his life for entertainment, hour by weeknight hour, binge by Saturday binge, Facebook check by Facebook check. I’m one of them. In the course of writing this I’ve watched all 13 episodes of House of Cards and who knows how many more West Wing episodes, and I’ve spent any number of blurred hours falling down internet rabbit holes. All instead of reading, or writing, or working, or spending real time with people I love.”

...who said it?

“Live a good life. If there are gods and they are just, then they will not care how devout you have been, but will welcome you based on the virtues you have lived by. If there are gods, but unjust, then you should not want to worship them. If there are no gods, then you will be gone, but will have lived a noble life that will live on in the memories of your loved ones.”

...who said it?

“I play with variables constantly.”

...who said it?

“Only the person who has learned Continual Love coming from a heart of Gratitude/Worship can effectively deal with the problem of loneliness.”

...who said it?
