This Saturday at 7 a.m., I shall begin to run a half marathon.  I anticipate I will finish it sometime before the sun goes down.

I got interested in running it last year, when my ex-girlfriend ran one. She trained hard for it, set a goal, accomplished it. Made me think I could do the same.

So last winter, I signed up for the one she ran, for this year: the SeaWheeze, a Lululemon-organized run-fest. They sent me some bright neon shorts that make my booty look fantastic and wick sweat away faster than a magnetic train. And now that run is .. oh jeeze in four days!!!

Panic! Hyperventilate! Dither! Eat a plate of nachos!

Kidding aside, I did some decent running training for a few months, a few months ago, and then kind of didn’t do any more as ultimate season and other pressing personal issues cropped up, and was about to give up on the whole idea, and then Jenny and Hayley, two good friends, basically goaded, guilted and cajoled me into training hard with them and committing to doing the run, which they’d also signed up for.  So I’m going to go for it.

And now I’m filled with this sense of awe and dread, the way you feel before you go on stage for a speech you haven’t fully prepared for.

I’ll let you know how I go.  Wish me luck!

“The sad truth is that most evil is done by people who never make up their minds to be good or evil.”

...who said it?

“Almost every American I know does trade large portions of his life for entertainment, hour by weeknight hour, binge by Saturday binge, Facebook check by Facebook check. I’m one of them. In the course of writing this I’ve watched all 13 episodes of House of Cards and who knows how many more West Wing episodes, and I’ve spent any number of blurred hours falling down internet rabbit holes. All instead of reading, or writing, or working, or spending real time with people I love.”

...who said it?

“Live a good life. If there are gods and they are just, then they will not care how devout you have been, but will welcome you based on the virtues you have lived by. If there are gods, but unjust, then you should not want to worship them. If there are no gods, then you will be gone, but will have lived a noble life that will live on in the memories of your loved ones.”

...who said it?

“I play with variables constantly.”

...who said it?

“Only the person who has learned Continual Love coming from a heart of Gratitude/Worship can effectively deal with the problem of loneliness.”
