Travis Smith: my resume, bio and photos back to the main blog page

This year, I think I’m truly an addict.  I’m on two Ultimate frisbee teams: Chronic Injury and East Van Halen.

EVH is still my true love, the people for whom I charge the batteries.  Chronic is, though, a hell of a lot of fun.  Even just with one wet, rainy, cold, slippery night behind us, I can tell these folks have spirit.  Also, we won both games.  That’s pretty sweet, and may explain my infatuation.  Thursday I’ll play my first EVH game, and if we win that, I’ll be in love with two teams. No problemo.

This week is a particularly busy one. I’m launching several sites and helping at Northern Voice.  I can’t say that my life is no fun these days—see above paragraph—but I can also say there’s a lot of social I wish I could be doing and a very little of it I’m actually doing; but I just can’t possibly fit it in.  If you’re reading this and you know I’m AWOL, I’m sorry.  If you don’t realize I’m talking about you, I’m doubly sorry.  And if you aren’t even reading this any more, well, who can blame you?

I did however, have a fabulous social surprise waiting for me tonight: Michelle and Aaron came by, bearing an entire dinner.  I think they were watching some rerun from the ‘50s and got confused about how people behave in the ‘10s.  It was an awesome treat, made possible by Susie’s tweet last night bemoaning the lack of dinner fairies.  Well, folks, Twitter does make dreams come true, if your dreams are of food elves and turkey dogs and rhubarb pie.  Mine are.  No seriously, they are.  I know Aaron and Michelle are having a rough week, which makes their gift all the more touching.

We ended the evening as all evenings now end, with The Watching of the Youtube Videos.  Overheard

“The sad truth is that most evil is done by people who never make up their minds to be good or evil.”

...who said it?

“Almost every American I know does trade large portions of his life for entertainment, hour by weeknight hour, binge by Saturday binge, Facebook check by Facebook check. I’m one of them. In the course of writing this I’ve watched all 13 episodes of House of Cards and who knows how many more West Wing episodes, and I’ve spent any number of blurred hours falling down internet rabbit holes. All instead of reading, or writing, or working, or spending real time with people I love.”

...who said it?

“Live a good life. If there are gods and they are just, then they will not care how devout you have been, but will welcome you based on the virtues you have lived by. If there are gods, but unjust, then you should not want to worship them. If there are no gods, then you will be gone, but will have lived a noble life that will live on in the memories of your loved ones.”

...who said it?

“I play with variables constantly.”

...who said it?

“Only the person who has learned Continual Love coming from a heart of Gratitude/Worship can effectively deal with the problem of loneliness.”
