Travis Smith: my resume, bio and photos back to the main blog page

Yep, it’s that time of year again: The Ides of October, also known as $ travis++.

I have charged up my phone battery to prepare for the incoming Twitters and Facebook Wall posts, but instead of just getting a buzzing sensation in my pocket, I’m going to do something a bit fun this year with your birthday wishes. For every birthday wish I get, I’ll be donating $5 to a charity: Kiva.

Update: Yes, of course you can tell other people about this—strangers count too and I’m happy to shell out an extra $5 for someone new.  Thanks!

They’re a micro-loan agency, so that means your one-time birthday wish will do good in an ever-increasing way; the donation becomes a loan that gets paid back, and given out, over and over again.

I’ve chose Kelli Consuelo Garc?a Reyes, in El Salvador, who’s an entrepreneur kind of like me.

If you want to donate to her directly, too, that’d be awesome.  She’s trying to raise another $450 dollars, and I doubt if I’ll be able to make up the difference—but I sure don’t mind trying.  Oh, and a quick tip o’ the hat to Darren Barefoot, who didn’t directly give me the idea, but whose occasionally charitable impulse overlaps his blogging compulsion to influential effect.

I’ll list the birthday wishers here. So far:

Overheard

“The sad truth is that most evil is done by people who never make up their minds to be good or evil.”

...who said it?

“Almost every American I know does trade large portions of his life for entertainment, hour by weeknight hour, binge by Saturday binge, Facebook check by Facebook check. I’m one of them. In the course of writing this I’ve watched all 13 episodes of House of Cards and who knows how many more West Wing episodes, and I’ve spent any number of blurred hours falling down internet rabbit holes. All instead of reading, or writing, or working, or spending real time with people I love.”

...who said it?

“Live a good life. If there are gods and they are just, then they will not care how devout you have been, but will welcome you based on the virtues you have lived by. If there are gods, but unjust, then you should not want to worship them. If there are no gods, then you will be gone, but will have lived a noble life that will live on in the memories of your loved ones.”

...who said it?

“I play with variables constantly.”

...who said it?

“Only the person who has learned Continual Love coming from a heart of Gratitude/Worship can effectively deal with the problem of loneliness.”

...who said it?
