Rogers Is Still the Devil

I just got an automated call on my cell phone from Rogers.  The cheery recorded voice told me I got some new feature—free something calls, whatever, not the point—for the next few months for free. Uh, Rogers.  Just because I pay YOU for the use of your network, does not give YOU the right to call my cell phone with your automated blabber mouth marketing message.

Wii Came, Wii Queued, Wii Consumed

So, I’m wearing a wrist band right at this very moment that entitles me to a Wii. I lined up this morning at 5:20 on Broadway at the Toys ‘R’ Us (you’ll just have to imagine the ‘R’ is backwards).  I was the 11th in line; the first person had started the line at 8 p.m. the previous day.

The Mighty Apple Computer, and My Smoten Battery

Oh mighty Apple, Inc., I beseech thee! I need a sign, something to renew my faith in you.  I, your humble and obedient buyer of shiny things, am tested by your product’s failures.  Today, I went to turn on your apostle, my MacBook, and it would not recognize the presence of the Holy Spirit in the form of its own battery.  The battery was like unto a rock.

Kids Today, and What They Don’t Get

Susie has a number of old cassette tapes in the door pocket of our car; she listens to them to decide if she should re-download the music from iTunes.  It’s good stuff, like Big Pig - Bonk, and Erasure, and Fine Young Cannibals. So tell me, without cassette tape boxes, what are the kids today using when they need to scrape the snow off their windshields in a pinch?

That’s a Lot of Email

One of the things that’s neat about Eudora is that it has this little-known menu item called “Statistics”.  I had a look at it recently.  Because it’s the beginning of the year, it has a lot of stats that helped me get a sense of how much email I dealt with last year.  You might find some of these numbers unbelievable; I know I do. The best statistic: Eudora says I’m nearing my 1,000,000th email received since 2001.

Yes But No But

I have had an incredibly productive day, but I didn’t do any of the things I needed to do.  Procrastination, thy name is .. something, whatever, I’ll figure it out tomorrow.

Susie’s Got a Litebook

I got Susie a litebook this fall.  Not a “non-heavy” book, nor a light “thing-to-read”.  A litebook is a bunch of LED lights that you’re supposed to shine at your face for a little while each day.

I’m Speaking at Northern Voice

It’s official.  I’ll be doing a talk about “How to Be a Citizen Journalist” at this year’s Northern Voice.  I’m excited about it—it’s a topic that’s getting a lot of attention these days.

A Cold Winter’s Night

The heat’s off at our house, so I’m huddled around the computer to keep warm. Our heater’s pilot light went out yesterday, and it took us a while to realize it.  I couldn’t get it relit, despite my lighter shaped like a giant match.  The repairman comes tomorrow.
