WHO: Leslie Woit, writing the Cultural Icon column in Hemispheres
CONTEXT: “Going up north. It?s one of the great national aspirations. One in 10 Canadians owns a cottage; the rest bring beer. On the first long weekend of the summer, we open them up to celebrate the birthday of Queen Victoria, the only country in the world to do so. We do it with a twist?an estimated 150 million. That?s the number of bottles of beer that are drunk over the long weekend, affectionately referred to as May Two-Four, a play on the date and the number of bottles in a Canadian case.”
